What Is the Quadruple Marker Test?
The Quadruple Marker Test is a second-trimester prenatal screening done between 16 and 18 weeks of pregnancy. It assesses the risk of certain chromosomal and structural abnormalities in the developing fetus, including:
- Down syndrome (Trisomy 21)
- Edwards syndrome (Trisomy 18)
- Neural tube defects like spina bifida
This test is especially valuable for women who missed the first-trimester screening or require further evaluation based on earlier results.
What Does It Measure?
The test analyzes four substances in the mother’s blood:
- Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) – A protein made by the baby’s liver
- Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) – A hormone from the placenta
- Unconjugated Estriol (uE3) – A hormone produced by the placenta and baby
- Inhibin-A – A protein produced by the placenta
The levels of these markers are used to calculate the individual risk score for genetic conditions.
Who Should Consider This Test?
- Women over age 35
- Those with a family history of genetic conditions
- Pregnancies conceived via IVF or IUI
- Women who missed or declined first-trimester screening
- Cases where the NT scan or Dual Marker Test showed unclear results
Is the Test Diagnostic?
No. The Quadruple Marker Test is not a diagnostic test. It provides a risk estimate. If a high risk is indicated, further diagnostic tests like amniocentesis or NIPT (Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing) may be recommended.
Benefits of the Quadruple Marker Test
