What Is Fetal Echocardiography?
Fetal Echocardiography—commonly known as Fetal ECHO—is a specialized ultrasound that focuses exclusively on your baby’s heart structure and function while still in the womb. This scan allows doctors to assess your baby’s developing heart in detail to detect any abnormalities or functional concerns early on.
It is typically performed from 16 weeks of pregnancy, especially if there is a higher risk of congenital heart issues.
What Does a Fetal ECHO Scan Check?
Fetal ECHO examines:
- The structure of the heart (chambers, valves, vessels)
- Blood flow patterns using color Doppler
- The heartbeat rhythm and rate
- Connections between the heart and major blood vessels
- Any signs of congenital heart defects (CHDs)
When Is Fetal ECHO Recommended?

- The mother has diabetes, thyroid disorder, or autoimmune disease
- IVF or assisted reproductive technology (ART) was used
- The mother had infections during pregnancy (e.g. Rubella, CMV)
- There is increased nuchal translucency (NT) from first-trimester scans
- Twin or multiple pregnancies
- Certain chromosomal or genetic conditions are suspected
