An anomaly scan, also known as the Level 2 ultrasound or mid-pregnancy scan, is a detailed scan performed between 18 and 22 weeks of pregnancy. It checks the baby’s physical development and helps detect any structural abnormalities.

- Baby’s brain and skull
- Spine and spinal cord

- Heart (4 chambers and major vessels)
- Kidneys, bladder, and stomach
- Limbs (arms, legs, hands, and feet)
- Placenta position and function
- Amniotic fluid levels
- Umbilical cord and blood flow (if needed)

Yes, it is completely safe and painless. The scan is done through the abdomen using ultrasound waves. No radiation is used, and it poses no harm to the baby.
What to Expect During the Scan
- You’ll lie comfortably on a scan table
- A clear gel is applied to your abdomen
- The fetal medicine consultant moves a probe to get different baby views
- The scan takes around 30–45 minutes
- In some cases, you may be asked to walk or come back after a short break if the baby is not in a suitable position
